Shinn misses Slipper, pledges to wrap up Triple Crown
2008-04-21 04:16:38After watching from his couch on Saturday as Sebring won the richest juvenile race in the world, the 20-year-old stayed upbeat and had a smile on his face at Gai Waterhouse's stables yesterday.
He has pledged to play his part in the colt's quest to win the Triple Crown.
Waterhouse paraded her Golden Slipper winner to his cast of owners, who race the horse through Denise Martin's Star Thoroughbreds.
Shinn has received constant praise from Sebring's owners about his character and determination to play a role in the horse's future.
"It's good to see so many happy owners here, this is what it (racing) is about, and they all keep telling me how they were thinking of me yesterday which is good," Shinn said.
"I'm sure we will get plenty more opportunities, especially this weekend."
Shinn had been booked to ride Sebring in the Slipper since the colt's exciting debut win at Rosehill on January 19, but suspension forced the jockey to watch the race on TV.
"It was pretty tough watching the races at home on the couch but I can not think of myself, this is a whole team operation and I was just so happy for Gai (Waterhouse) and Denise (Martin) and all the owners involved in the horse," Shinn said.
"I am lucky that I am a part of this team environment because plenty of jockeys would never get the chance to get back on a horse like him.
"It is a real team here with Gai and I'm sure she will have plenty more good chances in Golden Slippers in years to come that I will get the opportunity to ride. Glen (Boss) did a great job to win the race and it has just made me more confident that he (Sebring) will win the Sires' on Saturday."
Sebring will race in the Group 1 Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday. It is shaping as a Golden Slipper rematch with second placegetter Von Costa De Hero a confirmed starter.
The David Hayes-trained colt surged down the outside of the field and looked to have the Slipper in his grasp before Boss guided Sebring along the fence to snatch the $3.5 million purse.
"The way that Sebring hit the line showed he has the ability to go on and win the Triple Crown (Golden Slipper, Sires' Produce, Champagne Stakes)," Shinn said. "What he faced in the Slipper is virtually the same field that will be in the Sires' and he overcame plenty of obstacles to win.
"Sitting on the sidelines has made me hungry to win on Saturday."
