Jockey Doleuze to miss SIA Cup after positive test

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - French jockey Olivier Doleuze has tested positive for a banned substance and will miss the $2.2 million Singapore Airlines International Cup on Sunday. Doleuze, who had been due to ride fancied French challenger Balius in the city-state's biggest race of the year, provided a urine sample that contained a prohibited substance after a race meeting at Happy Valley on Wednesday, the Hong Kong Jockey Club said. "The racing stewards have exercised the powers they have .... and have decided to stand jockey Doleuze down from riding until an inquiry into the regularity has been determined," it said in a statement. The 36-year-old Doleuze, who has more than 700 career wins, was also due to ride Sanziro in the KrisFlyer International Sprint later on Sunday.

Eight Belles' trainer takes issue with PETA's call for Saez suspension

The trainer of euthanized filly Eight Belles adamantly defended the way jockey Gabriel Saez handled the Kentucky Derby runner-up. In an interview with The Associated Press on Monday, Larry Jones said Saez applied the whip only to prevent Eight Belles from crashing into the rail. "This filly in every race has tried to drift toward the rail," Jones said. "It's her comfort zone, and Gabriel knows this. This kid made every move the right move, and I hate it that they're wanting to jump down his throat. He did not try to abuse that horse to make her run faster. He knew he was second best, that she wasn't going to catch Big Brown." Jones spoke while traveling from Churchill Downs to Delaware with his other prized filly, Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell. Jones is scheduled to have a news conference Tuesday at Delaware Park. Saez, a 20-year-old Panama native, was riding in his first Kentucky Derby. He frequently rides for Jones. "I remain heartbroken over Eight Belles,…

Horse of a Different Color

I love horse racing. Sure, I like the betting that's associated with it, but I also enjoy the beauty of watching thoroughbreds thunder around the track. The majestic animals maneuvering for supremacy, the crowds turning toward the finish line, and the ceremony of the winner's circle augment the sights, sounds, and smells of the stables. The sport of kingsBecause of my love for the sport, I'm torn over the brash sponsorship by United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) of Big Brown, who won the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. From the delivery company's perspective, it was a no-brainer, though terms of the deal still haven't been disclosed. As part of the sponsorship deal, though, Big Brown's jockey wears brown pants with the UPS logo and dons a brown UPS cap after the race is run. UPS has extended its contract to the Belmont Stakes at New York's Belmont Park, where the third leg of horse racing's storied Triple Crown will be run. No horse has won all three races in the 30 years since Affirmed won…

AP IMPACT: Losing racehorses killed in Puerto Rico

CANOVANAS, Puerto Rico (AP) -- For thoroughbreds in this U.S. Caribbean territory, being fast enough to win, place or show is a matter of life and death _ losers often don't even make it off the racetrack grounds alive. More than 400 horses, many in perfect health, are killed each year by injection at a clinic behind the Hipodromo Camarero racetrack, said chief veterinarian Jose Garcia. The Associated Press on Friday examined clinic log books that confirmed Garcia's account. The handwritten logs list the names of the horses, the trainers, the date of execution and the dosages of lethal drugs. Garcia allowed an AP reporter to view the logs but prohibited him from taking notes or photographing the pages. Unlike on the U.S. mainland, where many former racehorses are retrained for riding or sent to refuges, the animals have few options in Puerto Rico. Owners say caring for and feeding a losing racehorse is too expensive. "If it doesn't produce, after a while I give it away or I kill it,"…

Preakness jockeys' advertising patches benefit charitiesMoney will go to needy former jockeys and to research for horse safety.By Larry Stewart, Los Angeles Times Staff WriterMay 18, 2008BALTIMORE -- Active jockeys have found a new way to help their less fortunate brethren and horse racing in general. The 12 who rode in the Preakness wore advertising patches because of a sponsorship deal with NetJets, a private air travel company, and were each paid $7,500, with that money going to racing charities. It's all part of a Triple Crown initiative that began with the Kentucky Derby and also involves the Jockeys' Guild, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Assn. and the Triple Crown racetracks. The Derby Day promotion raised $500,000 for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, and a check was presented to disabled jockey Jackie Fires by jockey John Velasquez here Friday. The 20 jockeys who rode in the Kentucky Derby were each paid $10,000 for wearing the patch, which raised $200,000 for the cause.…

Prospect of Curlin proves daunting

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Churchill Downs racing officials have more than five weeks to hustle horses for the Stephen Foster Handicap, but all that time still might not be enough to get a field of much size. That's because Curlin, the reigning Horse of the Year, is tentatively being pointed to the June 14 Foster, and who wants to run against him? "Having a horse like Curlin is great, but it sure does make it tough to get anybody else," said Donnie Richardson, senior vice president of racing at Churchill. Trainer Steve Asmussen said Tuesday at Churchill that he is "possibly, hopefully" intending to run Curlin in the Grade 1, $750,000 Foster, which would mark the colt's first start since his smashing victory in the $6 million Dubai World Cup on March 29. Curlin had his first timed workout since the World Cup when he breezed an easy half-mile in 52.20 seconds here Monday. "He'll go another slow five-eighths next Monday," said Asmussen. "He's been galloping great.…

Bayou's Lassie leads Distaff Turf parade

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Speed on the Churchill Downs turf course, strong on Friday, continued to be strong in the first grass race Saturday as Bayou's Lassie, Dreaming of Anna, and Ventura went around the track one-two-three in the $150,000 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile.

Jockey Edgar Prado sent Bayou's Lassie clear of Dreaming of Anna, the 7-5 favorite, on the first turn, and the pair turned back a challenge from her through the stretch. Ventura, a bit rank in the early stages, briefly looked like a threat when she moved out to launch a run at the top two in upper stretch, but was unable to make an appreciable impact.

Bayou's Lassie, who paid $26.20, covered the mile over good footing in 1:37.70.

Sterwins scores at 13-1 in Ben Ali

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sterwins, the longest shot in a field of six, circled the field and pulled away from heavily favored Go Between to post a 13-1 upset Sunday in the Grade 3, $150,000 Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland.
With Shaun Bridgmohan riding for Melnyk Racing Stables and trainer Malcolm Pierce, Sterwins returned $28.80 after winning his Polytrack debut by 3 1/4 lengths. Go Between, the 1-2 favorite, finished another 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Sir Whimsey in the 1 1/8-mile race.

"He's one of those horses that always makes a nice run at the end," said Bridgmohan.

It's a Bird led most of the way, but then the field bunched together, with Go Between looming boldly from the outside. But even farther out, Sterwins was full of run, and he went past with ease to finish in 1:48.53.

Sterwins, a gray 5-year-old gelding by Runaway Groom, was bred in Ontario by Eugene Melnyk. He now has won 6 of 17 career starts.

War Pass injured and out of Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- One-time Kentucky Derby favorite War Pass will miss next month's Run for the Roses because of a leg injury likely to sideline the colt for a few months. War Pass, seen here winning last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile, will miss the May 3 Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs. Trainer Nick Zito said Saturday that X-rays revealed a small fracture in the left front ankle of last year's champion 2-year-old. "It's unfortunate -- it just wasn't meant to be, maybe," said Zito, a two-time winning Derby trainer. "It's a shame because he has all the ability in the world. He's one of the best I've ever had." Zito said there was no swelling and the colt was "walking sound," but that he started to worry something was wrong with last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner as pre-Derby workouts continued. "We had some good days, but we started to get some bad days," Zito said. "We were getting to crunch time and I was getting these funny things,…

Behindatthebar wins Lexington Stakes

The latest, however, likely won't be joining him at Churchill Downs. Behindatthebar pulled in front of Samba Rooster down the stretch and won the $325,000 Lexington Stakes by a length on Saturday at Keeneland, picking up $201,500more than enough graded stakes earnings to qualify for next month's Derby. Pletcher didn't rule out an appearance for his colt, but signaled it was doubtful the horse would join stablemates Monba and Cowboy Cal in the May 3 Run for the Roses. Those two finished first and second in the Blue Grass Stakes a week ago, also on Keeneland's Polytrack. "I don't think it's a distance issue," Pletcher said. "It's a question of whether he's a dirt horse or synthetic horse." Behindatthebar, which went off at 5-1 odds, paid $13.60, $7.60 and $5.20. Samba Rooster paid $17 and $9.20, and Riley Tucker $6.80 to show. Behindatthebar used a late charge under David Flores, passing three horses down the stretch. "When he passed those horses, he wanted to lug…

Racing: Trainer sets sights high after Cup win

It may be a pipedream but trainer Tim Symes has pencilled in New Zealand's richest race for Saturday's Hawkes Bay Gold Cup winner The Veep. The $2 million Kelt Capital Stakes would appear a tall order for The Veep but with the race run on Symes' home track at Hastings he reckons he has a horse good enough to warrant an attempt. Symes is the first to concede The Veep would need conditions in his favour, such as the heavy track that prevailed for the $130,000 group two 2200m handicap at Hastings. "He'd go a pretty good race even if it was firm track but on a wet track that would be more of a hindrance to the others," Symes said yesterday. "He's a pretty good horse. I think he'd have every chance if he got track conditions like he got yesterday." The Kelt is run at Hastings on October 4 and first nominations for the 2040m group one weight-for-age feature close on May 6. The Veep has been a good performer for Symes who bred and owns the Deputy Governor five-year-old gelding…

Mark Todd heads to UK in Olympic bid

With a record sixth Olympic Games in his sights, double eventing gold medalist Mark Todd heads off to the UK on Sunday on the international comeback trailIn a late bid for Games selection, Todd successfully completed the first leg of the Olympic qualifying criteria at the Puhinui three-day-event in March and needs to complete another three-star competition within the set guidelines to be considered. The 1984 and 1988 gold medalist has pinned his hopes on reaching the target at the Saumur three-day-event in France next month aboard 10-year-old grey gelding Gandalf, who he bought in January. Failing that, Todd, 52, has one other chance, at an event in Bramham, England, in June. "I am very comfortable and happy with Gandalf," Todd said. "We'll do another couple of competitions in the UK and again, I won't have a lot of time before Saumur and hopefully if that all goes well, then just concentrate on the build-up towards Beijing." Competing with the shortlist of eight riders…

Shinn misses Slipper, pledges to wrap up Triple Crown

SYDNEY'S leading hoop Blake Shinn missed the opportunity of a $200,000 pay day aboard Golden Slipper winner Sebring, declaring the pain has made him more determined. After watching from his couch on Saturday as Sebring won the richest juvenile race in the world, the 20-year-old stayed upbeat and had a smile on his face at Gai Waterhouse's stables yesterday. He has pledged to play his part in the colt's quest to win the Triple Crown. Waterhouse paraded her Golden Slipper winner to his cast of owners, who race the horse through Denise Martin's Star Thoroughbreds. Shinn has received constant praise from Sebring's owners about his character and determination to play a role in the horse's future. "It's good to see so many happy owners here, this is what it (racing) is about, and they all keep telling me how they were thinking of me yesterday which is good," Shinn said. "I'm sure we will get plenty more opportunities, especially this weekend." Shinn had been booked to ride…
